Some of the information available about parenting can sound like you're always doing the wrong thing. Sometimes it can seem like you need to take some things with a grain or two of salt. You're not paying enough attention, and then some parents react to that and the pendulum swings in the other direction. When it comes to something like over-parenting, you really should make your own decision about it.

The media is partly to blame for overprotective parenting, and this is because TV, newspapers and other media tend to focus on all of the terrible things that can happen to kids. It all depends on where you live, but generally speaking most people do not live in terribly dangerous places. Naturally, we're not suggesting you expose your child to extreme dangers, so you need to have a good view of your personal situation. When children are very young, it is normal for them to be the central point of interest in their parent's lives. Parents that go off the deep end may sometimes put their entire life on hold simply because their children are now around. When you do this, you can allow your kids to learn by example, observing what you do as well.

Don't be the clueless parent who has some problems, and then you act them out in a way that impacts your children.

Whether it's a math test, assembling a toy or learning to ride a bike, kids will sometimes struggle and fail, and this is just a part of life, and you can't always be there to prevent this from happening. This is very much also a growing process for you because you're the one who is supposed to be in control. Avoid being the educational over parenting person when it concerns studies, and there's nothing wrong with hiring a tutor if you can't remember how to do algebra. Over parenting is a very recent phenomena that the wealthy, or at least a well-off, seem to have created on their own. These aren't parents who are neglectful or abusive, merely misguided. Sadly, this type of parenting backfires all the time, making the children too dependent upon the parents, thus not allowing them to become self-sufficient. This problem is very similar to ignoring your kids, but with different end results and consequences.
